Midjourney finally ships video — and it's roughly 25× cheaper than Sora was

Midjourney shipped its first video model — V1 Video. The headline numbers: 5-second clips, animated from existing Midjourney images, at roughly 25× cheaper per second than Runway, Veo 3, or the late Sora.

A video job costs about the same as upscaling — one image’s worth of cost per second of video generated.

What V1 Video does

Image-to-video. You generate an image with Midjourney as you always have. Then animate it into a 5-second clip. The animation respects the source image’s style, composition, and characters. If you spent ten prompts getting the perfect Midjourney still, you can now turn that exact still into a moving shot without losing what made the still work.

5-second clips. Short by intent. Sora was 10-20 seconds at launch. Runway Gen-4.5 at default settings is 5-10. Kling can hit 2 minutes. Midjourney is choosing the short clip lane and pricing accordingly.

No native audio. Veo 3.1’s killer feature — synchronized dialogue and music in a single pass — is not in V1. If you need voiceover, you still need ElevenLabs or Veo 3.

Artistic-first. V1 is Midjourney’s voice translated to motion. Cinematic compositions, painterly style options, the same --sref / --cref style controls that defined Midjourney v6+. This is not a photorealism play — Veo 3 still wins photorealism. It’s an artistic-quality video play.

The pricing math actually matters

Standard cost in this category (per second of video):

For a Midjourney Standard subscriber ($30/month, ~6,400 GPU-minutes), V1 Video meaningfully extends what you can make per dollar. Generating 50-100 short clips per month is now realistic at the $30 tier.

For ad creative, social content, or any short-form work where 5 seconds is enough, Midjourney V1 Video may be the most cost-effective AI video tool on the market this week.

Where it wins, where it doesn’t

V1 Video doesn’t win:

How this changes the AI video category

Sora’s web/app shuts down tomorrow (April 26). The day before, Midjourney shipped a video product priced at a fraction of any competitor and aimed at the artists who define the market’s prestige tier.

For Sora users migrating, the recommendation tree changes:

The AI video category at the end of April 2026 has clearer specialization than at the start of the month:

No single winner. The right answer is increasingly task-dependent, and at $10-30/month per tool, most professional creators are running 2-3 in parallel.

What I’d recommend doing about it

If you already pay for Midjourney ($10/$30/$60): Try V1 Video this week. The cost per attempt is so low that experimentation is essentially free.

If you’re a Sora refugee: See the migration article — Midjourney V1 Video is now an option that wasn’t on the table when I wrote it two days ago.

If you’re not on Midjourney: This is not the moment to subscribe. Try the existing dedicated video tools first (Runway, Veo, Kling) and see what you actually need. Midjourney’s stronger argument has always been image quality; video is the secondary play.

If you’re a brand or agency doing ad creative at volume: Run a side-by-side test. The cost difference is large enough that even a 70%-as-good output may be the right call for high-volume work.
