Anthropic didn't enter robotics — it ran the MCP playbook on the physical layer

On 27 August 2026 Anthropic opened a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a spec for AI agents to operate lab and manufacturing equipment. It ships no robot model, is explicitly model-agnostic, rides on MCP, and is promised as open source.
